Porcelain Fillings

Tooth Preparation:

In the first session, the affected area is numbed with local anesthesia, and any decay or damaged tooth structure is removed. The tooth is then reshaped to create the space for the porcelain filling.

Impression:

An impression (mold) of the prepared tooth is taken. This impression can be taken using either digital or traditional methods. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the porcelain filling will be custom-made.

Temporary Filling:

Since the final porcelain filling is fabricated in the lab, a temporary filling is placed in the prepared tooth to protect it until the permanent filling is ready.

Fitting the Porcelain Filling:

In the second session, the temporary filling is removed, and the fit of the custom-made porcelain filling is checked on the tooth. Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure a proper fit.

Bonding:

Once the porcelain filling fits correctly, it is bonded (cemented) to the tooth using an adhesive protocol. Porcelain fillings are known for their durability and ability to closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth. They are often used in cases where there is significant tooth structure loss, and they are more conservative than full dental crowns. The lifespan of porcelain fillings can vary depending on several factors, including the skill of the dentist, the quality of materials used, the patient’s oral hygiene practices, the initial condition of the tooth, and whether the patient clenches or grinds their teeth. There isn’t a fixed duration for how long they last, but with proper care and regular dental check-ups, they can last for many years.
